Design

As the founder of the brand, I begin the design process in my Montréal Atelier. This is where I sketch, pattern draft, and sample new creations. After rounds of perfecting, I then reach out to my pattern grader, and fabric cutter to help me produce a larger scale of garments. Once the fabric is discovered, pre-washed and cut, then I can start the production in my Atelier.

We source our fabrics in Montréal overstock warehouses that carry a wide variety of unused designer fabric. We search for rare and unique fabrics that inspire new designs.  We also work with mills in India to create custom sustainable fabrics, such as our bespoke Hemp/ Banana fibre blend.

Alex Watson was born from the idea of utilising fabric that already exists in the world. We source our fabrics from local overstock warehouses that carry a wide variety of designer fabric. Sustainability can mean a variety of different things today. We choose to look at it as designing responisbly. We ask ourselves, is this product deserving enough to exist in the world? Is this fabric good for the skin? Can this design be constructed better to last longer? Sustinability goes beyond just fabric choice, and guides each of our business decisions daily.

These are the left over fabrics of other fashion houses who overestimated their needs. Traditionally, brands would hold on to their excess fabrics for a few seasons and then send them to the landfills. This allows us to reduce waste and support local businesses. We strive to create something beautiful that's never existed before, while also reducing the industry's textile waste.

We work with local Montréal artisans to size grade patterns, pre-wash fabric, print our patterns, and cut out the fabric into pattern pieces. We make all of our clothing in-house, which means we have control over the entire production process. We pay our workers fair wages and make sure that they work in a safe and healthy environment. We all work in the heart of the Garment District, and regularely communicate to ensure a healthy production schedule that is doable for everyone involved. Local production is amazing for transparancy and means that we are not outsourcing production to international factories with poor labor practices.
